About The Event

After a long winter of lockdowns, join us on March 10th for our first edition of "Behind the Wine" a talk and tasting series guided by the winemakers behind the wines. For this first edition, we are very excited to welcome Melanie Hickman of Bodegas Bhilar in Rioja Alavesa.

We'll be tasting 4+1 wines. 2 reds and 2 whites plus a very special surprise wine. Melanie will be guiding us through the tasting and telling us all about her and her husband David's winery.

Also joining us is our friend Marc Gomez Segu, who will be cutting Jamon Iberico Joselito on the spot and providing Manchego cheese to keep us from going hungry. There will also be bread from Bar Isabel and an extremely unique olive oil made with Farga olives, a native variety of Catalunya, that come from millennial olive trees (1000+ years old).

    About The Winery

Bodegas Bhilar is a boutique winery located in Elvillar, Rioja Alavesa, run by husband and wife team, David Sampedro and Melanie Hickman. David & Melanie strongly believe in sustainable viticulture, since 1999 they have transformed the vineyards that David grew up in. First, they converted to organic farming and then began following tenants to recover the harmony between people, earth, vines, and the cosmos. In 2014, tractors were eliminated and horses were brought back to farm the vineyards.

Vineyards have dominated the landscape of Elvillar for hundreds of years due to the inability to grow any other crops in the calcareous soils. Consequently, this region is known for having some of the oldest vines in all of Rioja. Rocky, limestone soils meander through three valleys running from the Sierra Cantabria mountain to the River Ebro giving Elvillar a distinct and diverse viticultural landscape. High-altitude vineyards cling to the hills and valleys ultimately crawling up the side of the mountain toward the Sierra Cantabria.
