Notes

This low intervention Garnacha is like the Méntrida countryside in a bottle. Crisp, fragrant and invigorating. This wine will transport you to a fresh mountainside forest before bringing you back home to comforting and lasting flavours. Good for taking your senses on a hike!

A fun and easy-drinking red made with 100% Garnacha grapes from salvaged 50-year-old vines, growing in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos near Toledo, some 70km south of Madrid. Bet you didn’t know Garnacha (Grenache in French) is native to Spain!

Ganadero is a favourite in our “Aficionado” tasting packs (and a perfect daily wine) for its smooth and well rounded juicy flavours and aromas of fresh mountain herbs. Fruity, bold notes of blueberries, blackberries, and black currant leaf followed by earthy chocolate notes and a touch of vanilla.

Ganadero means rancher or farmer. The label depicts one of the most recognized icons of Spanish culture abroad, the bull, but with a playful twist, portraying it dressed as a ganadero, effectively making the bull the master of its own destiny, a very meta way of showing this wine’s low human intervention.

Terroir

The Sierra de San Vicente nestled amidst the Tiétar (a tributary of the Tagus) and the Tajo (Tagus) valleys, is located north of the Méntrida Designation of Origin and is under the influence of the Sierra de Gredos. It runs through an altitude of 750 meters above sea level.
This favourable microclimate can be felt at night when temperatures drop and aromas waft through our old Garnacha vineyards which turn them into veritable gardens perfectly suited to a harsh granitic and demanding land.

Vinification

All of Canopy's wines are made using low-intervention and sustainable practices. This single varietal Garnacha from old vines undergoes a pre-fermentation maceration carried out under controlled temperature, with subsequent alcoholic fermentation taking place. Once completed, malolactic fermentation takes place in 500-litre barrels. A young wine with minimal oak, only aged 3 months in French oak.

Winemakers

Canopy is among the top wineries producing organic wines and recuperating ancestral Garnachas located at a high altitude in the beautiful "Sierra de Gredos” not far from Madrid.

Belarmino Fernandez and Alfonso Chacon are the hardworking creators of these wines that, as the famed Michel Bettane said in Shanghai, represent the “renaissance of wines in Spain”.

The vision of these oenologists, interested in what the terroir and the grape represent, has placed their wines at the same level as the best low-intervention French wines, perfectly defined by the term “vin de garage”.

Their wines derive their authenticity straight from the land, by selecting the best vines, caring for them sustainably, clearly identifying each plot with only one or two barrels, and blending them in the bottle to create something out of this world.

Ratings & Reviews

89 Points - Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) - 2018 and 2019 vintage
Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker reviewer for Spain) notes about this wine:

The super approachable and affordable 2018 Ganadero was produced with grapes from the zone of Camarena in the appellation of Méntrida. It fermented in stainless steel with moderate extraction and matured in 500-liter oak barrels for three months. This comes from deeper soils rich in clay, and the profile of the fruit is quite different from the one from El Real de San Vicente bottled as Castillo de Belarfonso. This is darker and riper, with some candied aromas and notes of ripeness as well as berries and a touch of honey. The palate is round, with juicy fruit and almost unnoticeable round tannins.

The entry-level Garnacha red 2019 Ganadero follows the path of previous years and was produced with grapes from the zone of Camarena in the appellation of Méntrida. It's a pale and aromatic, juicy and fruit-driven Garnacha matured in barrel for three months. It's very easy to drink. It's medium-bodied and has very fine, slightly chalky tannins. With time, the aromas turn headier. An impressive and showy vintage. This is really very good and a true bargain. In 2021, they are using some grapes from Gredos for this bottling.
